You most likely have a collection of your favorite stones, but you’re not sure whether it’s alright to wear or carry them all at the same time.
How do you know which crystals have complementary energies and which ones will clash? What will happen if you use too many stones? Will their energies be magnified, or will there be no change in their combined vibrations?

Some believe the more the merrier when it comes to your stone collection. However, we have been surrounded by hundreds of different crystals for most of our lives. Others may feel differently. If you are a beginner at crystal healing or if you are an empath who is sensitive to energies, you may want to focus only on one stone at a time.
When you first start working with your stones, it can be quite overwhelming trying to keep their names and metaphysical properties straight. Your small crystal collection can quickly grow. And before you know it, you’re already carrying around a separate bag for all your tumbled stones, and there are too many colorful bracelets on both your wrists.
Then you’ll start to wonder if your stones’ energies are cancelling each other out and losing their potency because you have no idea how to correctly combine multiple stones.
Everyone has their own preference, and the number of stones that you should carry or wear really depends on you.
Chakra jewelry combines multiple stones, usually seven or more, and that’s perfectly alright! For most people, seven stones are good enough. If you want to use more than that, that’s entirely up to you, too.
On the other hand, you may find some crystals do not go together with your energy. They may give you a headache, a feeling of lethargy, or discomfort. In this case, you know your vibrations are incompatible. If you start to feel confused, disoriented, or lightheaded, you may want to cut back on the number of stones you’re using. Break up the crystals and use them one by one. Sometimes if you combine multiple stones, it can be ungrounding or overwhelming. It can also energize you too much.
Are There Incompatible Stones And Crystals?
Certain stones will work better with other stones. Stones that have the same elements or properties work well together naturally.
Theoretically, all crystals can be together. However, if you are an empath who is easily overwhelmed, you want to experiment with different crystal combinations and determine how each will affect you energetically.
It's common to hear, "Never combine this crystal with that crystal". You can insert crystal names if you'd like. I was just using it as an example. Honestly, I haven’t really come across a situation where crystals didn’t work well together. Sometimes they can cancel each other out but overall, I feel they play nicely together.
Be cautious of crystals that might have an opposing effect like Carnelian for energy, versus Blue Lace Agate or other calming stones. Sometimes these energies are cancelled out or don't have the impact you were looking for.
It’s important to determine what you want to achieve when choosing your stones. Focus on what you truly want to accomplish with your stones.
What is your intention? What is it you seek to do? Narrow down your intentions such as: Healing (Green Aventurine), for bones (Calcite) or Citrine for tummy issues.
Follow your intuition for it is your compass. It truly is. I know everyone says this but it's the truth! Keep it simple and know how the crystals work for you individually before combining. We see these enormous, complicated crystal grids on social media. They are beautiful for sure but please don't feel intimidated by these. You can accomplish the same goals with smaller, less expensive or fancy crystals. It's not about the bling. It's about your intentions!
Stones have different properties, and what’s more important is knowing your purpose because it’s that energy you are working with. Combining two crystals with a very high vibration or powerful energy, may also cause some concern for various people. For example, combining Moldavite with Phenacite could be overwhelming for some. Common outcomes such as Lepidolite and Lithium Quartz are very calming and contain lithium, however be aware that it might be too much of one thing as well.
My favorite combinations
Love and Spirit Combination: The simple duo of Amethyst and Rose Quartz deepen your state of self-love and spirituality. It's perfect to try out if you're sensitive to stones.
Protected Spirit Combination: The pairing of Amethyst and Lava Stone keeps you protected and grounded during your metaphysical journeys. It's an important combination for empaths who are especially sensitive to negative vibes and could use that extra shield.
Grounded Heart Combination: The pairing of Rose Quartz and Lava Stone grounds your heart in the knowledge that you are Unconditionally Loved. This combination will accept and hold loving thoughts and feelings. It will amplify and project these back to you when you need them most.
7 Chakra Combination: Combine the colors of the rainbow to balance each of your seven major chakras. This is one of the most powerful and popular combinations to get all your energies flowing correctly at once. Stones that can be used are: Red Jasper (Root), Sunstone (Sacral), Citrine (Solar Plexus), Rose Quartz (Heart), Sodalite (Throat), Amethyst (Third Eye), Celestite (Crown).
Ultimate Quartz Combination: Amethyst , Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz , Smoky Quartz and Citrine are all in the Quartz family. They are the staples of the stone world- the basic yet necessary gems for all. This is a great beginner's set of stones to experiment with.
Make your own combinations
Stones that are the same color are usually compatible on an energetic level. The same can be said for stones that are from similar or compatible element associations. You can also look at the stone’s zodiac or planetary associations. Compatible stones also have the same uses, meanings, energies, properties, or mineral groups.
There are no concrete rules when it comes to the compatibility of different stones, but this is a pretty easy and straightforward guide.
Color:
Color is a good place to start but there is a lot more to working with crystals than the color frequency alone. You can use a color wheel to view opposing colors as a guide. However, sometimes it works out. I use Green Aventurine or Malachite with Red Jasper or other red crystals. They are opposing colors but they work in some circumstances.
Crystal Structure:
Cubic (or isometric) crystal system, based on a square inner structure - Fluorite, Diamond, Pyrite, Gold, Garnet, Magnetite
Hexagonal Crystals based on a hexagonal (6-sided) inner structure – Beryl, Emerald, Apatite, Aquamarine, Morganite, Sugilite
Trigonal crystal system (Rhombohedral System), based on a triangular inner structure -Quartz, Agate, Aventurine, Jasper, Hematite, Carnelian, Tourmalines, Calcite
Crystal Family:
I love combining crystals based on their crystal family.
For example, the Quartz family: Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz, Smokey Quartz, Citrine, Amethyst, etc.
Other great ones to combine include Calcite, Agates, Jaspers, Tourmalines, and so on. Jaspers, Agates and Quartz all work great together too!
The Elements:
Air/wind Stones - Amethyst, Fluorite, Selenite, Labradorite, Sugilite
You can also use Carnelian, Peridot, Lapis Lazuli, Blue Chalcedony, Rhodonite, Chrysolite, Gold Beryl, Topaz, Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, Citrine, Rock Crystal, and Sapphire.
Any of these stones can be combined to boost their metaphysical properties.
When you combine these air stones, they will promote a positive change in your way of thinking. Their energies will also help you become more resilient and flexible, are especially beneficial to people who suffer from chronic diseases or ulcers in their body or soul and can also make you more sociable and active physically. Owing to their mobility, air stones speed up all your body processes, including your consciousness and subconsciousness.
Fire Stones - Amber, Carnelian, Citrine, Fire Agate, Fire Opal, Red Jasper, Sunstone.
Amber, Zircon, Red Tourmaline, Sardonyx, Red Garnet, Ruby, and Diamond are also examples of firestones.
Firestones bring a positive effect on your blood circulation. They will also remove the stagnant energies in your body so that you can fully recharge and start with a clean slate. When you combine multiple stones like fire stones, you will also have a stronger desire to act on your dreams, desires, dreams, plans, or goals. They are also known to ease the effects of melancholy and increase your physical and mental vigor.
Earth Stones - Agate, Jade, Halite, Hematite, Jasper, Jet, Onyx, Obsidian, Black Tourmaline, Garnet, Pyrite
Try other earth element stones as well, like Malachite, Aventurine, Nephrite, Turquoise, Cacholong, , and Quartz.
The energies of earth stones will help you find strong and stable ground that will give you the right amount of confidence. These stones call for consistency and constancy. They will also eliminate lingering doubts and bring mental balance. They are also known to strengthen your physical endurance and overall health.
Water Stones - Amethyst, Aquamarine, Moonstone, Blue Lace Agate, Celestite, Chalcedony, Chrysocolla, Pearl, Sea Salt, Selenite, Rose Quartz,
Other examples of water stones include Hematite, Coral, Opal, Chrysoberyl, and Emerald.
Water stones have a kind of sedative effect. They dissolve and wash away your negative emotions and distressing thoughts. They also protect you from negative vibrations and the evil eye. They are very effective when used in meditation because they will help you clear and silence your mind. They will help you achieve relaxation quickly.
With these stones, you will also understand the essence of everything in this world. You can also combine multiple stones that carry energies of the fifth element, which is the spirit.
Spirit - Apophyllite, Danburite, Diamond, Phenacite (Phenakite), Clear Quartz
These spirit stones will give the space, balance, and connection for all the other elements to exist. The spirit is important to your sense of connectedness with your spirit and well-being. Without this element, you will be unable to feel joy or experience union.
Without it, you will not be able to transcend or transform. The spirit element signifies the energy of the gods and goddesses, as well as the human spirit. Use these spirit stones if you want to find your life path or if you’re seeking spiritual knowledge. They will also make you understand the karmic paths of life.
General guidelines: mix fire with air, and earth with water.

What crystal shapes go together?
You can use all sorts of crystal shapes in your meditation, healing practice, and Feng Shui rituals.
Here are some shapes that will enhance your experience when used in conjunction with other stones:
Crystal Points: Crystal points direct the energy of your stones. For example, if you are lying with stones on your body, surround yourself with crystal points. Face them outward if you want to transmit the energy and face them inward if you want to receive the energy.
Pointed Crystal Clusters: Place your chosen stones on the cluster to radiate your crystals' energies throughout your space. These pointed clusters also cleanse and charge your smaller crystals.
Crystal Pendulums: Use crystal pendulums to ask your subconscious yes and no questions. Do this over your other stones to determine if they are the stones you need in your practice at this time.
Can crystals be kept together?
Energetically, all crystals can be kept together if you are open to it.
Physically, you want to protect your crystals from scratches and harm by keeping them separate. Display them on their own stands or keep them apart so they are not touching.
If you have harder crystals that won't damage each other, they can all be kept together. If you have softer stones that are sensitive to fracturing, keep them separate. The Mohs Scale of Hardness will help you determine your stone's toughness.
Which crystals are the most powerful?
Crystals are known to have gentle versus aggressive vibrations, but they are all equal in their power. Depending on your intention, every crystal can radiate with the same strength, although at different frequencies, to manifest your healing goals.
For example, Malachite is known as an aggressive heart-healer while Rose Quartz is known as a gentle heart-healer. However, neither crystal is more powerful than the other. They both serve their healing purposes and vibrate with equal strength at different frequencies.
My Final Thoughts on Combining Crystals
There may be stone combinations that will cancel out or negate each other, but there really is no bad way to combine multiple stones.
At the end of the day, you can always remove or add some more stones to the mix! You may just need to be careful about carrying too much energy with you wherever you go.
Blessed Be
